Issues and Causes

The project intends to address the issue of socio-economic development of the communities along the Gulf of Kachchh with a view to empower the local communities to manage the coastal natural resources in a sustainable manner. There is high level of dependency of coastal communities on coastal natural resources. Due to this, indiscriminate cutting of mangroves for fuel and fodder, encroachment of village commons is seen. There is also the major problem of direct disposal of untreated sewerage and industrial effluents leading to large scale destruction of coastal natural resources.

This has led to issues such as salinity ingress, sea water intrusion onto land, decrease in breeding area for marine ecosystems, degradation of corals and coral reefs and destruction of mangroves. Therefore it becomes necessary to educate the coastal communities towards preservation and rejuvenation of coastal resources and also to generate alternate livelihood avenues for these communities to reduce the stress on coastal resources.
