Coastal Environment Monitoring & Conservation

Sea Water Monitoring For Bio-Physical Parameters

Gujarat is placed among one of the progressive industrial states. The enterprising nature of people of Gujarat has placed the States among one of the developed State in India. The largest coastline, continental shelf is a natural gift to the State. The marine bio-diversity of Gulf of Kachchh is valuable, important and unique. Agriculture, animal husbandry and fishery are the major renewable resources that are available in Gulf of Kachchh areas. Over the years, increasing population and industrial growth has generated great pressure over coastal bio-resources. Depletion of these marine bio-resources has direct and indirect impact over the life quality of local communities.

Generating information about biophysical status of the intertidal areas and to develop benchmark information about the floral and faunal diversity in the Gulf of Kachchh.

Objective

To support effective and efficient conservation and management of coastal biodiversity by providing research based information and inputs to managers.

To generate information about bio-physical status of the intertidal areas and to develop benchmark information about the floral and faunal diversity in the Gulf of Kachchh.

To initiate the rejuvenation of live corals by transplanting some of the coral species in Gulf of Kachchh so that coral biodiversity as well as the general marine biodiversity surviving on coral reefs are enriched.

Issues & Causes

Significant marine bio-diversity in Gujarat is yet to be fully understood. The Gulf of Kachchh is vibrant in terms of multiple ecosystems and habitats including mangroves, coral reefs, inter tidal zones, etc. It is therefore vital to create a database of information about marine flora and fauna. In spite of having such a long coastline and pristine ecosystem yet to be fully explored and understood in the state, Gujarat does not have a single marine research station. The system of marine research needs to be strengthened and institutionalized in Gujarat. In fact, in spite of the long coastline, good mangrove & coral areas, and significant pressure of industrialization & urbanization on coastal areas, emphasis on marine sciences is conspicuously lacking in Gujarat. Thus, there is a need for strengthening institutionalized marine research, information and database system pertaining to marine biodiversity in Gujarat.
